THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MARCH 24TH

1913 Celtic have had a poor season with neither of the major Scottish honours won for the first time since 1903, but there are signs that the team is re-grouping under the influence of that impish young Irishman called Patsy Gallacher. To-day he scores in the 4-1 defeat of strong-going Raith Rovers at Parkhead, and lays on many chances for veteran Jimmy Quinn who scores a hat-trick. 15,000 roar their appreciation of the talented youngster from Donegal.

1937 36,000 are dangerously overcrowded into Fir Park, Motherwell (on a Wednesday afternoon!) to see the Scottish Cup Replay. Thousands walk from Glasgow. Motherwell score first, but in the second half Jimmy McGrory and Willie Buchan score the goals which put Celtic into the Semi Finals. The crowd invade the field on several occasions and Jimmy Delaney and Johnny Crum are chaired off at the end by exultant and joyful fans.

1962 At the eccentric kick-off time of 3.30 (in an attempt to get a larger crowd) Celtic beat Aberdeen 2-0 in a League match. Frank Brogan scores on either side of half-time. Rangers lose 0-1 to Dundee United, which strengthens the position of Dundee at the top of the League. They themselves beat Hibs 1-0 at Dens Park.

1969 A temporary spoke is put in the wheels of the Celtic bandwaggon when Hibs come to Parkhead this Monday night and earn a 1-1 draw before 30,000 fans. Annoyingly it is ex-Celt Joe McBride who equalizes in the latter stages of the game. Earlier Willie Wallace had put Celtic ahead. This game is of course a dress rehearsal for the League Cup final in a fortnight's time.

1973 Celtic have a good 2-0 win at Tynecastle with goals from Bobby Lennox and Dixie Deans. The top of the League is very close this year, and to-day Rangers also win, 1-0 over Hibs at Ibrox.

1991 Celtic fans display a brilliant touch of humour when they all appear for the Old Firm game at Parkhead brandishing red cards! This is because in last week's disgraceful match in the Scottish Cup, Rangers had had three men sent off! To-day Scott Nisbett of Rangers joins the red card brigade, and several others are lucky not to share the same fate as Celtic win 3-0 with goals from Anton Rogan, Joe Millar and Tommy Coyne.
