THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – APRIL 26TH

1909 In Celtic's epic 8 games in 12 days to win the Scottish League, they take a decisive step to-day with a 4-0 win over Motherwell at Parkhead this Monday afternoon. Jimmy Quinn scores a hat trick, and Davie McLean the other. Celtic now have three games to play this week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) and need to win two of them.

1920 Celtic are in serious trouble following the abandonment of their game against Dundee at Parkhead because of crowd disorder. This is a Monday afternoon fixture, and there is a certain amount of ill feeling about Dundee who, it was felt, "lay down" against Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday in a 1-6 defeat. This charge is possibly not totally without foundation, for the Dundee Courier is ashamed of their team's performance, but there can be no excuse for what happens at Parkhead to-day. Willie McStay has scored a penalty but Dundee have equalized. The score is 1-1 late in the game, and two Dundee players simultaneously foul Adam McLean. The crowd invade the field, some Dundee players are attacked, and the game is abandoned.

1954 It is party time at Celtic Park this Monday as the Scottish Cup and the League Championship trophy are paraded before the 1-0 win over relegated Hamilton Accies. 20,000 fans are there to see Mike Haughney score in the 9th minute.

1961 One of the saddest nights in Celtic's history as they go down 0-2 to Jock Stein's Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Cup Final Replay after dominating the game but being unable to score. Seven years have now passed since the Scottish Cup was won. Bottles are thrown at Hampden out of sheer frustration and young fans cry themselves to sleep. It remains a scar on an otherwise happy childhood.

1969 132,870 are at Hampden to see Celtic lift the Scottish Cup in emphatic style by beating Rangers 4-0. Billy McNeill scores early, then come two goals immediately before half time from Bobby Lennox and George Connelly before Stevie Chalmers wraps it up near the end. Rangers fans invade the field in an attempt to get home, but the sadistic Glasgow police force them back into the terracing to watch the rest of the game! It is Celtic's 20th Scottish Cup, and they have won all three domestic honours in the month of April.

1986 In the third last League game of what seems to be a disappointing season, Celtic beat Dundee 2-0 with goals from Brian McClair and Maurice Johnston. This result puts some sort of pressure on Hearts, but they win to-day as well. What Celtic supporters feel about the chances of winning the League is shown in the 14,511 attendance and the ghostly, echoing atmosphere.
