THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – APRIL 27TH

1895 Hearts are indeed worthy winners of the Scottish League (it has been a good season for Edinburgh, for St.Bernards are the Scottish Cup winners as well), but Celtic are finishing their League season strongly with a 2-0 win over Clyde at Parkhead. Willie Ferguson and Tommy Dunbar are the scorers.

1908 The triumphant team of all the talents (winners of the Scottish League, the Scottish Cup and the Glasgow Cup) appear at Brockville on the Holiday Monday to play Falkirk. 9,000 are there with a huge influx of triumphant Celtic hordes. They see a good game which is drawn 1-1 with Willie Semple, in one of his rare appearances for the club, scoring the goal.

1955 68,831 are drenched in the rain this Wednesday evening at Hampden as Celtic go down 0-1 to Clyde in the Scottish Cup Final Replay. Inexplicably, Celtic drop Bobby Collins who is arguably their best forward, for seeming to barge into Clyde's goalkeeper in the first game. Celtic-daft Tommy Ring scores Clyde's goal and will be ostracised by his brothers for so doing.

1968 Without kicking a ball, Celtic win the Scottish League. Aberdeen beat Rangers 3-2 at Ibrox, and this means that unless Celtic lose something like 16-0 to Dunfermline on Tuesday night, they will be Champions! Celtic's Manager Jock Stein takes his players to watch the Scottish Cup Final (Dunfermline 3 Hearts 1) at Hampden, and they hear the good news on the team bus!

1985 Celtic draw 1-1 at Pittodrie, but this is enough to give the Dons the Championship. Roy Aitken scores with a penalty kick, and the game ends in controversy when Frank McGarvey's goal three minutes from time is chalked off for a foul. Still, over the season, it has to be admitted that Aberdeen are worthy Champions.

2003 Controversy over the date of this SPL game (only three days after Celtic's UEFA Cup Semi Final victory in Portugal) is forgotten as Celtic beat Rangers 2-1 at Ibrox. Alan Thompson scores with a penalty and John Hartson scores the other after a fine Henrik Larsson pass from a Didier Agathe cross.
