THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – APRIL 28TH
1909 Celtic continue their dramatic quest for their fifth League Championship in a row by picking up two of the necessary four points in three fixtures to be played on three consecutive nights! Tonight, Jimmy Quinn scores a hat-trick and Davie McLean scores two as Celtic beat Queen's Park 5-0.
1917 Celtic's successful League season comes to an end at Shawfield as 16,000 see Jimmy McColl score twice and Patsy Gallacher, Adam McLean and Joe Dodds once each in a 5-0 beating of Clyde. Celtic have now won the League Championship four years in a row, and their form has been a perfect tonic to those suffering in the dark years of war.
1969 Celtic's triumphalism flops badly. On the Monday night after the Scottish Cup Final which brought a treble, and before a now meaningless League game against Morton at Parkhead, a car with the three Scottish trophies on its roof drives round the Parkhead track to the cheers of the 31,000 crowd. The players are greeted warmly - but then proceed to lose 2-4 to Morton!
1973 At a packed and tense Easter Road before 45,000 fans, Celtic win the Scottish League Championship for the 8th consecutive time. It has been a close race this year, and Celtic are indebted to the two goals scored by Dixie Deans and the one by Kenny Dalglish to clinch the title.
1984 In an eloquent comment about how well Celtic have done this season, only 9,553 are at Parkhead to see a 3-2 win over Hibs, in which Brian McClair scores twice and John Colquhoun once. The League challenge has long since fizzled out, and the only interest left is in the Scottish Cup Final against champions Aberdeen.
2002 Hilarity at Tynecastle! It is an end of season fixture. Celtic already League champions, are comfortably beating Hearts 4-1, Simon Lynch and Shaun Maloney having scored two each. A penalty is awarded, and both young gentleman try to grab the ball with the idea of scoring a hat-trick. After an unseemly wrangle, which the rest of the Celtic team and the BBC commentators find amusing, Shaun Maloney wins the tussle - but misses the penalty!
