JUST ANOTHER SATURDAY – ALLOA, FIORENTINA AND BARCELONA ON THE SAME CELTIC WISH-LIST

By David Potter

The curtain came down on the SFL on Saturday with many games “dead” as far as any interest went. But the big issue in Division One was that Morton are now safe from the play-off whereas Clyde, managed by John Brown and replete with Hunnish names like Albertz and McSwegan, must face Alloa on Wednesday and Saturday in the play-offs.

Both teams won 3-0, Morton beating Partick Thistle by that score and Clyde doing likewise with Stirling Albion, but as Morton were a goal ahead in the first place, then Davie Irons escapes the ignominy of having managed two relegated teams in the same year!

As for Clyde, I'm afraid that Alloa now join Fiorentina and Barcelona on our midweek “wish list”, but it hurts to wish Clyde beaten because I remember Harry Haddock and Tommy Ring of blessed memory in the 1950s. But as long as they are Hunnish and Brownish, I fear we must drink to “Confusion to the HBC!” – the Hunnish Brownish Clyde.

The other play-off will be between Airdrie United and Raith Rovers, and I am tipping the Raith to emerge victorious from that one.

Other games did not really matter, but we Queen of the South supporters (well, you have to support someone in the Scottish Cup, and they are all that is left!) would have been alarmed by their 4-0 tanking at East End Park by the hitherto under-performing Dunfermline Athletic.

In the play-off for Division Two, it will be a dogfight between Arbroath, Montrose, Stranraer and Cowdenbeath. In spite of being threatened by a psychotic Stranraer supporter at Forfar earlier in the season, I'm going for the men from the south to win through from that little lot.

But talking about Forfar, oh dear, my lovely wee team has now finished rock bottom of Division Three - and that's after having sacked their manager Jim Moffat earlier in the week and replaced him (temporarily) by ex-Celt Willie Garner. Remember him? I recall him getting the run-around at Muirton Park by a young St. Johnstone player called McCoist on an unhappy Wednesday evening in 1981.

Reluctant congratulations to East Stirlingshire for finishing second bottom this year, and a sincere word of admiration for the men of Forfar, East Stirlingshire, Dumbarton, Albion Rovers and a few others who keep football going in these areas.

It is the easiest thing in the world to be a football fan when you are successful. What these guys do merits real commendation. Have a good summer boys and we'll see you again in August.

David Potter.
