THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – APRIL 30TH

1892 3,000 are at Old Celtic Park in fine weather to see Neil McCallum, Sandy McMahon and Johnny Campbell score the goals which beat Abercorn 3-0. The magnificent new stadium is now almost completed and will be used next season. The Scottish Cup (won three weeks ago) is on display.

1909 Celtic at last win the Scottish League after their epic 8 games in 12 days. To-night, a Friday, they win 2-1 at Douglas Park, Hamilton in front of a good crowd of 8,000. Davie Hamilton and Jimmy McMenemy score for Celtic, but when the Accies pull one back late in the game, desperate defending is called for. Celtic have now won the Scottish League 5 times in a row, beating the record of Rangers from 1899 to 1902.

1966 Celtic take a massive step towards winning the Scottish League for the first time since 1954 by beating Morton to-day at Cappielow. Goals are scored at the end of each half by Jimmy Johnstone and Bobby Lennox. Poor Morton, with ex-Celt Jim Kennedy on board, miss a penalty and are relegated.Celtic and Rangers are level on points, but Celtic have two games to play whereas Rangers only have one.

1968 It is gala night at Dunfermline as the Scottish Cup winners Dunfermline take on Celtic who will win the League unless they are beaten 16-0. In one of his rare jokes, Jock Stein says he is not to play a defensive game to-night. George Farm, the Manager of Dunfermline, parades the Scottish Cup as Jock Stein tries to steal it! Meanwhile the terracings are dangerously overcrowded, but they see a good game which Celtic, with two goals from Bobby Lennox, win 2-0.

1986 Hearts would have won the League tonight if Celtic had failed to beat Motherwell at Fir Park. But, in front of 10,510 fans, Celtic win 2-0 with goals from Brian McClair (one of them a penalty kick). Celtic are now 2 points and 4 goals behind Hearts. They need to beat St.Mirren by 4 goals at Love Street on Saturday and hope that Dundee beat Hearts at Dens Park. It seems unlikely but....

1994 Celtic fans are banned from Ibrox after a piece of minor damage on their last trip. Some question the legality of David Murray's edict, but the team (at the end of a shocking season) earn a creditable 1-1 draw with a goal from John Collins. Above the stadium appears a helicopter with a banner saying "Hail! Hail! The Celts Are Here!
