THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 1ST
1912 Celtic draw their Glasgow Charity Cup game with Partick Thistle 0-0 at Firhill, but as is the way in these days in this competition where no-body wants Replays, corners are counted in the event of a draw. On this basis Celtic win 5-2 and progress to the next round.
1915 A new front has been opened up in the War, at Gallipoli in the Dardanelles at the entrance to the Black Sea. News is not particularly encouraging, but Celtic, the League Champions, provide some cheer for their fans by beating Queen's Park 2-1 in the Glasgow Charity Cup First Round. Andy McAtee and Patsy Gallacher score the goals.
1926 The whole of Great Britain is in a state of unparalleled uncertainty with the Trade Union Congress having declared a General Strike as from Monday May 3rd. To-day however, 20,000 are at Firhill to see Jimmy McGrory and Adam McLean score the goals that beat Partick Thistle 2-1 in the First Round of the Glasgow Charity Cup.
1945 The world waits for a very important announcement from Berlin. The Russians are said to be outside, or even inside, Hitler's bunker. Germans are surrendering in their droves, and Hitler is said to dead, having committed suicide. But there is no official announcement yet.
1971 In an act of pure theatre at Parkhead, Jock Stein plays his Lisbon Lions for the last time with the exception of Ronnie Simpson who has now retired. Ronnie however runs on with the rest of the players before being replaced by Evan Williams. Appropriately for a team which has now won six League Championships in a row, Celtic beat Clyde 6-1 with a hat trick from Bobby Lennox, two from Willie Wallace and one from Steve Chalmers.
1982 It is a remarkable day at Celtic Park with sun interspersed with snow showers, but Celtic take a large step towards the League Championship by beating Hibs 6-0 before a disappointing attendance of 16,064. Murdo MacLeod scores twice, and Danny Crainie, George McCluskey, Roy Aitken and Tommy Burns all score one each. To-night's BBC sports programme is interrupted with news of the Falklands War in the South Atlantic.
