GORD – JAN'S THE MAN

By Trialist

Prior to Celtic's 3-2 humping of the Huns on Sunday, Gordon Strachan launched a stout defence of the much-maligned Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who has been so vital to Celtic's recent resurgence of form, not only in goal-taking but in goal-making.

The Celtic striker has scored 19 goals for Celtic this season, including the crucial last-gasp, headed match-winner in Celtic's 2-1 triumph over the Huns on Wednesday 16th April.

Big Jan also turned provider on Sunday, the Dutch striker's headed knockdown from an Andreas Hinkel pass setting up Scott McDonald for Celtic's 4th minute opening goal in that memorable 3-2 Huns-skelping.

Gordon Strachan said: “Listen, Jan plays for the Dutch national side. If we put him up for sale tomorrow I know there will be four or five clubs in the Premiership wanting him, he could go to most top teams. Look at his record - it's one goal in every two games. Fantastic.”

Gordon Strachan explained: “The problem is he doesn't have too many mates in the Press, simple as that. You can come along here as a striker and if you have loads of good pals in the Press you are alright. Other strikers like Zurawski and Vennegoor of Hesselink have been marginalised because they don't. You media boys could start wars, you know that for a fact. Maybe sports writers don't start wars, but you have the ability to manipulate people's minds.”

Gordon Strachan added: “It's naive of you to say it's the fans when you actually manipulate them yourselves. I'm not saying the Press is entirely responsible, but if a Scottish player went to play in Holland he would be entitled to be treated with respect.”

Respect and ‘Hail! Hail!' to big Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink!
