THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 2ND
1891 Celtic beat Rangers 2-1 at Old Ibrox before 10,000 spectators with goals from Peter Dowds and Johnnie Madden. Although there are still two games left, Celtic will not now catch Dumbarton or Rangers in this inaugural Scottish League season, for they had too many defeats in the early part of the season, and they also were deducted 4 points for playing goalkeeper Jamie Bell illegally in the first game of the season.
1892 Scottish Cup and Glasgow Cup winners Celtic take their first step towards winning the Glasgow Charity Cup as well by beating Dumbarton 3-1 at Old Ibrox in the Semi Final. Neil McCallum scores two goals and Sandy McMahon scores one.
1908 The main interest of the 6,000 crowd at Parkhead is whether Maley's great Celtic team can win every competition they have entered. With the Glasgow Cup secured in October and the Scottish League and Cup won in April, there remains the Glasgow Charity Cup, the trophy that eluded them last year. They are off to a good start to-day with a 3-2 win over Partick Thistle with goals from Davie Hamilton, Willie Loney and Jimmy Hay with a penalty. Jimmy Quinn is out injured.
1945 Hitler is now dead! As the Germans surrender to the Western Allies in Italy and Austria, Celtic beat Third Lanark 5-0 in the First Round of the Glasgow Charity Cup with two goals from Jackie Gallacher, and one each from John Paton, Bobby Evans and Joe McLaughlin.
1979 Celtic have a good win over Hibs at Parkhead this Wednesday evening, setting them up nicely for their game against Rangers on Saturday. Mike Conroy, Davie Provan and Danny McGrain score the goals before 23,000 fans. 5 games remain and Celtic are a point ahead of Rangers.
1999 Celtic's night of shame as Hugh Dallas is hit by a missile and Celtic crash 0-3 to allow Rangers to win the SPL. Not everything can be blamed on the refereeing, and several players must take a share of the blame, not least Stephan Mahe who, although provoked, got himself into the situation of earning a red card before half time! It is one of Celtic's saddest nights - for all sorts of reasons.
