THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 3RD

1913 It has been a very unsuccessful season for Celtic, ironically as they are celebrating their Silver Jubilee of great achievements since 1888. But to-day sees the start of the final competition of the season, the Glasgow Charity Cup, and Celtic's veteran attacking centre half Willie Loney scores the only goal of the game against Clyde.

1950 Frequently out injured but nevertheless adored by the Celtic fans, John McPhail scores the goal which puts Celtic into the Final of the Glasgow Charity Cup as they beat Third Lanark 1-0 in front of 23,011 fans at Hampden.

1967 In the midst of all this success - Scottish Cup winners on Saturday and now in the European Cup Final - comes a disappointment for 44,000 fans at Parkhead, as the team go down 2-3 to Dundee United at Parkhead, in spite of goals from Tommy Gemmell (penalty) and Willie Wallace. Clearly an element of complacency has crept in, but a draw at Ibrox on Saturday will still win the League.

1975 75,457 are at Hampden to see Celtic win the Scottish Cup for the 24th time as they beat Airdrie 3-1 with two goals from Paul Wilson and a penalty from Pat McCluskey. This makes up for the loss of the League, and it is the end of an era as Billy McNeill announces his retirement at the conclusion of the game.

1986 One of the most dramatic days in Scottish football history as Celtic defeat St.Mirren 5-0 at Love Street, while Albert Kidd earns a place in Celtic history. He scores two late goals for Dundee at Dens Park to sink Hearts who only needed to draw to win the Championship. Celtic fans hear the news through the courtesy of BBC Scotland and thousands of crackling transistor radios. St.Mirren's goalkeeper Jim Stewart (ex-Rangers) simply cannot understand why thousands go delirious as he picks up a very simple ball. Brian McClair and Maurice Johnston score two each, and Paul McStay the other.

1998 Craig Faulconbridge steps out of obscurity to deny Celtic the League at East End Park, Dunfermline! Rangers having been defeated by Kilmarnock the day before, Celtic can win the League if they beat Dunfermline before a packed East End Park and TV cameras. For a while it looks good as Simon Donnelly scores a fine goal, but then late in the game Craig Faulconbridge comes on as a substitute for the Pars and scores with a looping header. Celtic now need to beat St.Johnstone at Parkhead on Saturday in the last game... but the coming week will not be good for supporters' already weakened constitutions.
