KEEP THE FAITH'S PARTISAN PREVIEW – Murderwell v CELTIC
By North Sea Bhoy
Hope springs eternal, I think the saying goes, and that's all we have left to cling to this term. Hope that a team from Russia, not a country famed for the performances of its club sides away from Mother Russia, can come over to England and stop the Orcs winning the UEFA Cup on penalties. Hope that injuries, tiredness and suspensions can take their toll on TFOD and we can nick the SPL title at the death.
On the face of it, hope is a mightily thin thing to be holding onto. Like Kate Moss at a pie-eating contest. Still, it's all we have between us and crash positions for the foreseeable future.
But, to keep that hope alive for another week we have to put in another good performance at Fir Park against Motherwell this afternoon. Another 4-1 would be nice, with a couple of early goals to settle the nerves, thank you very much.
The chance to go eight points clear before the Dark Side kicks off at Easter Road against Hibs on Sunday is one we can't afford to miss out on. If we can exert any sort of pressure on the Ugly Ones, we need to exploit it to the full.
Aiden McGeady and Motherwell captain Paul Quinn have both recently been the victims of physical attacks from “members of the public”. Do you need me to point a finger? What set of supporters with a history of violence might be feeling the strain at the moment. Got it? Yeah, though you might.
Aiden McGeady came off better than Quinn, who is out for the remainder of the season with a broken jaw. His place will be taken in the Steelmen's line-up by ex-Hun Brian MacLean. Talking of ex-Huns, Stephen Hughes returns after a bout of illness. Probably spewing after two recent humpings at Celtic Park for his former employers.
With another Orc, Smith, in goals, the Fir Park side have enough ugly players to ensure that they will be doing all they can to stop us winning the title. That means that it's going to be another tough 90 minutes.
Stephen McManus could return to the side following his injury against the Dark Side in their recent humping at Celtic Park. If Mick doesn't make it, Darren O'Dea will take over in a Celtic line-up that will not be much different from the one that recently humped the Orcs 2-1 and 3-2 at Celtic Park.
We should have the players and desire to keep the hope going for a wee while longer.
Damn, I was hoping to work in the fact that we recently humped the Orcs twice at Celtic Park. Ach, never mind, I'll mention it next time.
