THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 4TH
1895 Celtic finish off what has been a poor League season with a 2-1 win over Dundee at Celtic Park, the goals scored by Johnnie Madden and Johnny Divers the First. No quibble about the Champions (for Hearts beat Celtic home and away), the Scottish Cup also went to Edinburgh (for St.Bernard's won it), but Celtic did win the Glasgow Cup and are still in the Charity Cup.
1963 Underdogs Celtic do well to earn a Replay against Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final at a rainy Hampden. Both goals come just before half-time from Ralph Brand and Bobby Murdoch. Frank Haffey has a good game in the goal for Celtic, and young Jimmy Johnstone plays well on the wing. A bit of luck might just have won it, but it's a Replay a week come Wednesday.
1966 Celtic are almost there in their quest to win their first League Championship for 12 years, as they beat Dunfermline Athletic 2-1 at Parkhead. Alex Ferguson scores first for the Pars, but then Bobby Lennox equalizes almost immediately and Jimmy Johnstone scores the winner. Rangers beat Clyde 4-0 tonight, so the championship is not yet Celtic's, but unless they lose 4 goals to Motherwell on Saturday, it will be.
1974 Celtic win the Scottish Cup for the 23rd time as they beat Dundee United 3-0 at Hampden in a rather one-sided Final. Harry Hood and Steve Murray score before half time, and Dixie Deans scores at the end. Dundee United, playing in the Final for the first time, only once threaten through Andy Gray, now a SKY TV commentator.
1997 Celtic beat Hibernian 3-1 at Easter Road in a TV Sunday game, but this only delays Rangers winning of their 9th League Championship in a row, Celtic fans are disorientated following the sacking of Tommy Burns a few days ago ... but at least the Conservatives are no longer in power, beaten by Tony Blair's New Labour on Thursday. When will we see a new Celtic?
2002 Heartbreakingly, Rangers score in the last minute of the Scottish Cup Final after Celtic had twice been ahead through John Hartson and Bobo Balde. But Celtic had too many players half fit or out of touch, and Martin O'Neill makes one of his rare tactical errors in not introducing Lubo Moravcik. But, if only we had reached extra time...!
