THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 5TH
1891 Celtic deliver a spectacular 9-1 thrashing to poor Vale of Leven at Old Celtic Park before 2,000 people in a midweek fixture with little at stake. The Vale, Scottish Cup winners in 1877,1878 and 1879, are totally outclassed. Sandy McMahon scores 4, Jimmy McGhee 3 and Peter Dowds and Johnny Campbell the others.
1892 Celtic, the Scottish Cup winners, travel to Renton in Dumbartonshire to defeat the locals 4-0. Neil McCallum and Sandy McMahon score two each, but this good form is probably too late to win Celtic the Scottish League, which is heading to Renton's neighbours, Dumbarton.
1906 In a very high scoring game, Celtic lose 3-5 to Rangers in the Glasgow Charity Cup Final at Hampden Park. the goals are scored by Jimmy McMenemy (twice) and Peter Somers but defensive frailties let Celtic down.
1934 A depressing season may just be ending well, say Celtic fans after seeing a fine 4-1 win over Third Lanark in the Glasgow Charity Cup Semi Final at Hampden Park. Frank O'Donnell scores a hat-trick and Johnny Crum the other goal in a good victory.
1973 Celtic are unluckily beaten by Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final before 122,714 fans at Hampden. The winning Rangers goal is Tam Forsyth's infamous tap-in. Earlier Kenny Dalglish and George Connelly (with a penalty) had scored for Celtic.
1979 The Scottish League race takes a turn for the worse as Rangers beat Celtic narrowly 1-0 in a game played at Hampden because Ibrox is under re-construction. Celtic have hard luck as Johnny Doyle hits the post, but because of the bad winter, Celtic still have four games to play including Rangers at Parkhead. So, although, Rangers are now a point ahead, all is not yet lost.
