THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 6TH
1913 Celtic reach the Final of the Glasgow Charity Cup by beating Third Lanark 2-1 at Cathkin Park on a Tuesday evening. Bernie Connolly, a promising newcomer who may replace the ageing Jimmy Quinn, scores the first goal, and the second is a Willie Loney penalty kick. Celtic now play Rangers in the Final on Saturday.
1916 Celtic's triumphant season continues as they beat Rangers 3-0 in the Semi Final of the Glasgow Charity Cup before 30,000 at Celtic Park. In a very one-sided game, Jimmy McMenemy, Andy McAtee and Sunny Jim Young score the goals. Next Saturday it will be Partick Thistle in the Final at Hampden.
1970 It is one of the most painful nights in Celtic's history as they lose the European Cup Final to Feyenoord at the San Siro in Milan. This in spite of going ahead through a Tommy Gemmell goal in the first half. Feyenoord equalize almost immediately and then score the winner in extra time. Celtic have no real excuse other than complacency, and perhaps a faulty team selection.
1972 Dixie Deans earns his place in Celtic immortality by scoring a hat-trick in a Scottish Cup Final, something that puts him on the same level as Jimmy Quinn. Hibs are beaten 6-1 as Celtic win the Scottish Cup for the 22nd time. Billy McNeill puts Celtic ahead early on, and Lou Macari adds two late goals, but it is the Dixie Deans show. His famous somersault is well remembered after his brilliant solo second goal. It is all the sweeter for Dixie because it was he who missed the penalty in the European Cup penalty shoot-out only 17 days ago. 106,102 see this famous game.
2000 Celtic beat Aberdeen 5-1 at Parkhead in an SPL match which means little other than that Celtic have now beaten Aberdeen a total of 25-1 this season in five games. To-day Tommy Johnson scores a hat-trick and Lubo Moravcik two. 56,235 attend this embarrassingly easy game. Aberdeen's solitary goal is given a cheer, for such a poor Dons team as this is not good news for Scottish football.
2001 Celtic have been SPL Champions for a month and to-day in a rehearsal for the Scottish Cup Final in three weeks time, they beat Hibs easily 5-2 at Easter Road. The goals are well shared with Alan Thompson, Alan Stubbs, Lubo Moravcik, Henrik Larsson and Jackie McNamara all on the score sheet. The crowd is a piteous one of 8879, yet Hibs will get the same ticket allocation for the Scottish Cup Final as Celtic!
