THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 7TH

1921 20,000 are at Parkhead to see the Glasgow Charity Cup Semi Final between Celtic and Partick Thistle. Thistle are the Scottish Cup winners and contain Jimmy McMenemy in their ranks. They are given a warm reception by the Parkhead crowd (for they beat Rangers in the Final of the Scottish Cup!), but it is Celtic's Tommy McInally who turns on the style to-day with two goals in fine 2-0 victory.

1966 "Free at last" says one Celtic source with reference to to-day's events. It is party time at Motherwell as Celtic beat the home team 1-0 with a late Bobby Lennox goal to win the first Scottish League Championship since 1954. Some supporters celebrate on the roof of the enclosure at a dangerously overcrowded Fir Park.

1977 Celtic win the Scottish Cup for the 25th time by beating Rangers 1-0 with an Andy Lynch penalty kick just before half time. The weather is foul, the crowd is only 54,252 and the penalty is disputed by Rangers, but Celtic hold out in the second half to secure the trophy. It is generally admitted, even by Celtic sources to have been an awful game of football...but the fans are less concerned about that, for Celtic have won the Double. It is the first time for 20 years that the Scottish Cup Final has been televised live. Archie McPherson does the commentating on BBC.

1979 Celtic recover from their unfortunate defeat by Rangers on Saturday to beat Partick Thistle 2-1 at Firhill on the Holiday Monday. Davie Provan and George McCluskey score the goals which keep Celtic in the frame for the League Championship. Three games remain, and Rangers still have to come to Parkhead, so although Celtic are a point behind, their destiny still remains in their own hands.

1995 Celtic's "Hampden season" has been a disaster in playing terms, but to-day is one of the few bright spots as they beat Rangers 3-0 with goals from Pierre van Hooijdonk, Rudi Vata and an own goal. Rangers, champions for the 7th year in a row, have given up for the season, so perhaps the result is not quite as good as it seems.

2003 A fortnight before their trip to Seville, Celtic go top of the SPL on goal difference with an impressive 4-0 win at Motherwell. 12,037 fans see Stilian Petrov and Paul Lambert score two goals each.
