THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 8TH
1888 A game of football is played at the Celtic Park stadium. Hibs and Cowlairs draw 0-0, and the new team is due to play its first game against Rangers in three weeks time. This stadium has been worked on by volunteers all winter, and visitors are impressed by it.
1915 In a weekend dominated by the news of the sinking of the American ship the Lusitania off the coast of Ireland by a German U-Boat, Celtic win the Glasgow Charity Cup with a 3-2 win over Rangers at Ibrox. Joe Dodds, Johnny Browning and Jimmy McMenemy score the goals in a great game, watched by a crowd of 50,000.
1945 It is VE Day! Crowds gather at Buckingham Palace to see the King, the Queen and the Prime Minister Winston Churchill on the balcony. "In all our long history we have never had a better day than this" says the P.M. But the Japanese War remains, and the Soviet Union now holds half of Europe.
1963 Sensation at Hampden as the game between Scotland and Austria is abandoned with 11 minutes to go and Scotland winning 4-1. The referee Mr.Finney of England loses patience with the fouling tactics of the Austrians and the last straw is when he orders one of them off, and he refuses to go. This does not disguise the fact that Scotland have played very well with Davie Wilson of Rangers and Denis Law of Manchester United having scored two goals each.
1982 Celtic could have won the League to-day at Tannadice Park, but play abysmally and lose 3-0 to a young and eager Dundee United side. Aberdeen win, and this means that Celtic can yet lose the title if they fail to beat St.Mirren next week, and Aberdeen beat Rangers by 4-0.
2004 The Old Firm game at Parkhead seems to be heading for a 0-0 draw (in spite of numerous chances at both ends) until Chris Sutton hits a wonder goal from the edge of the box in the last minutes. This means that Celtic have achieved a "quadruple" over Rangers in the SPL this year - a "quintuple" if we count the Scottish Cup.
