THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 9TH
1893 Celtic win the Scottish League for the first time by beating Leith Athletic 3-1 at New Celtic Park. Only 3,000 are there to see this historic occasion, reflecting perhaps the view that the Scottish League is the lesser of the two competitions, the Scottish Cup being the more important. But "congratulations to the Celts" say the Glasgow newspapers.Jimmy "Tooty" Davidson scores twice and Johnny Madden notches the other.
1896 Celtic beat Rangers 6-1 in the Semi Final of the Glasgow Charity Cup at Second Hampden in front of 20,000 fans. Allan Martin scores twice, and the other goals are scored by Johnnie Madden, Barney Battles, Sandy McMahon and Willie Ferguson.
1936 Jimmy Delaney sparkles for Celtic as the team beat Rangers 4-2 to win the Glasgow Charity Cup in front of 43,000 at Hampden. Delaney scores a hat-trick and McGrory scores the other. Maley's comment is a brusque "Don't let that go to your head!"
1945 On the day after VE Day, 28,000 are at Hampden to see Celtic beat Queen's Park in the hastily arranged Victory in Europe Cup. Johnny Paton scores Celtic's equalizer, and then Celtic win 3-2 on corners, the accepted way of deciding such games in 1945. Malky MacDonald collects the trophy, but Celtic fans are disturbed by the non-appearance of Jimmy Delaney, still in dispute with the club over terms.
1959 The youthful Celtic team gain some consolation for a poor season as they win the Glasgow Charity Cup by beating Clyde 5-0. Alec Byrne scores a hat-trick and Neil Mochan scores two. 26,082 are at Hampden to see this game.
1998 It is deliverance at last as Celtic win the Scottish League Championship to prevent Rangers winning 10 in a row. They do this by beating St.Johnstone 2-0 at Parkhead. Henrik Larsson scores in the first minute, but it is not until late in the second half that Celtic can relax as Harald Brattbakk scores a second. Millions (and I mean millions) of Celtic fans throughout the world rejoice.
