THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – MAY 10TH
1913 Celtic's poor season will not be entirely unrewarded, for to-day they win the Glasgow Charity Cup by beating Rangers at Parkhead in the Final. Patsy Gallacher scores one of the goals, and Bernie Connolly scores two, leading supporters to believe that there is now a worthy successor for Jimmy Quinn.
1919 Celtic delight their fans by winning the first Scottish League title since the cessation of hostilities. They do this by beating Ayr United 2-0 at Somerset Park. Adam McLean scores one goal, but the other is scored by the star of the side, Andy McAtee.
1924 Celtic make up for a bad season by beating Rangers 2-1 at Hampden to lift the Glasgow Charity Cup with goals scored by Willie McStay and Patsy Gallacher. It will be Joe Cassidy's last game for the club, and a youngster called Jimmy McGrory plays well on the left wing. He has been farmed out to Clydebank, but has now been recalled.
1940 World history changes to-day. Winston Churchill becomes Prime Minister of Great Britain, and Hitler orders the invasion of Belgium, Holland and Luxemburg in a massive Western offensive. The "phoney war" of 1939-40 when nothing happened is certainly over.
1969 Scotland appal their many fans by going down 1-4 to England in a game at Wembley played on a Saturday night for TV reasons. Colin Stein of Rangers scores the only goal, but it is a night that most Scotsmen including Billy McNeill, Tommy Gemmell and Bobby Murdoch will want to forget.
1980 Celtic win the Scottish Cup for the 26th time by beating Rangers 1-0 after extra time through a George McCluskey flick on of a Danny McGrain drive. The triumph tends to be obscured in the crowd trouble at the end when Rangers fans invade the field to attack the Celtic players. Celtic fans retaliate, but the word "riot" is possibly an exaggeration made up by the media and the TV, which quite clearly relish the whole business! Meanwhile Danny McGrain collects the Cup.
