Hoopy History

THIS DAY IN CELTIC HISTORY – FEBRUARY 21ST

1891 Still cock-a-hoop after their first ever winning of the Glasgow Cup last week, Celtic travel to Dumbarton to play for the first time at Boghead in the Scottish League. It is a good game ending in a 2-2 draw with Mick Dunbar scoring both of Celtic's goals. Dumbarton will win this first ever Scottish League Championship, sharing it with Rangers.

1914 Celtic travel to Forfar to play there for the first time ever in the Scottish Cup. It is an easy 5-0 victory with a hat-trick for Jimmy "Sniper" McColl and one each for Jimmy McMenemy and Joe Dodds. Sunny Jim is belted over the head by an umbrella by an irate local lady for repeatedly fouling her son, Alec Troup who will go on to play for Dundee, Everton and Scotland after World War One.

1925 7,000 are at Parkhead to see Solway Star in the Scottish Cup. Celtic win at a canter with goals from Jimmy McGrory and Alec Thomson, and visibly ease up in the second half lest they humiliate the amateurs, most of whom are clearly in awe of the great Celtic players.

1970 Celtic defeat Rangers 3-1 at Parkhead in front of 75,000 fans in the Scottish Cup. The game is rough and not helped by two Rangers players "congratulating" Jim Craig for his own goal in the first five minutes. But Celtic rally and Bobby Lennox equalizes before half time. Then Davie Hay scores late in the second half from 25 yards before Jimmy Johnstone wraps it all up before the end. It is a glorious victory.

1981 Celtic consolidate their position at the top of the Scottish League with a fine 3-1 win over Rangers at Parkhead. Rangers are one up at half time, but Charlie Nicholas scores twice then Roy Aitken scores the third.

2001 On a cold Wednesday night at Parkhead, Motherwell, with Andy Goram in goal, hold Celtic until late in the game. Then a free kick from the edge of the box is rifled home from that little genius Lubomir Moravcik to send 58,736 fans home happy.
